Juan José Fernández-Durán holds a BSc in Actuarial Science from ITAM, a PhD in Statistics and Operational Research from the University of Essex and completed the Postdoctoral Bridge to Business (Marketing) in the Freeman School of Business of the University of Tulane.

He has been appointed to the National Research System of Mexico (Level I) and has published articles in journals such as Biometrics, Journal of Applied Statistics, Political Geography, Electronic Journal of Statistics, El Trimestre Económico, Statistical Methods in Medical Research, Statistical Papers y Technological Forecasting and Social Change among others.

His research interests include Spatial Statistics, Statistical Applications in Actuarial Science, Finance and Marketing, Panel Data Analysis and Simulation.

He worked in AC Nielsen Mexico in the area of marketing research (1993-94) and from 1998 to date he is a Full-Time Professor at ITAM.  From august 2004 to august 2010 he was Head of Department of Statistics of ITAM and in 2013 he received the ITAM Alumni Prize for Career Achievements in the Academic Sector.

He is Associate of the Society of Actuaries (ASA-20015) andFellow of the Royal Statistical Society. From 2001 to 2005 he was member of the directors board of the Mexican Statistical Association (Asociación Mexicana de Estadística, AME). From august 2008 to October 2014 he was the president of the Statistics Section of the Mexican Actuarial Board (Colegio Nacional de Actuarios, CONAC).

He has supervised more than 100 BSc dissertations in the BSc programs in Actuarial Science and Applied Mathematics.
